Dixon claims record tying sixth win this season
10/08/2008
Scott Dixon won the Meijer Indy 300 at the Kentucky Speedway on Saturday 9 August taking the New Zealander one step closer towards his second IndyCar Series title.

Dixon, who started from pole position and led the majority of the 200 lap race, entered the final lap trailing Helio Castroneves who was in search of his first win of 2008.  It wasn’t until Turn 4 that the Brazilian slowed down due to a lack of fuel allowing the New Zealander to pass and win by a mere 0.5532 seconds.

Dixon, whose win at Kentucky was his sixth this year, tied the IndyCar Series record for most wins in a season set by his teammate Dan Wheldon in 2005.  Dixon now leads the championship with 558 points giving him a 78 point lead over closest contender Castroneves.

Scott Dixon, #9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing, said:
"Firestone brought a great tyre that had great consistency and grip. We put an extra half stint on that final set of tyres, and they held up fantastic. They definitely had the same balance the whole day and, on an oval like this, one that's pretty rough, to do a stint and then some without them going off at all is really good."

Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing, said:
"What another incredible IndyCar Series finish tonight. Congratulations to Scott Dixon for tying the record for most wins in a season; this sure seems to be his year. This is the kind of night that makes us at Firestone quite proud. Our talented tyre engineers and chemists came up with a new compound formula for this weekend that drew pretty much unanimous rave reviews in the paddock. The spec was designed to add grip while not sacrificing durability, and it did just that. To see all those drivers stop for a late splash of fuel and not even consider changing tyres is the best affirmation we can receive for just how well the Firestone Firehawks were performing."
