GP2 News - iSport Throws Down The Gauntlet04/12/2006
As the GP2 Series heads into its Christmas break, iSport International have laid down the gauntlet as the team to beat. They confirmed their 2007 driver line-up as Timo Glock and Andreas Zuber last week and went on to set the pace at the final test session of the year at Valencia.
Glock (above), fresh from a successful Formula 1 test at Barcelona with the BMW Sauber F1 Team, topped the timesheets on day one, with Zuber taking the honours on day two. Hammering their advantage home, the drivers were first and second quickest on day two, when lap times were at their fastest.
"It was a good test for us," said iSport boss Paul Jackson. "The drivers worked well together and the cars were quick. It's good to enter the Christmas break on the back of such a positive performance."
While iSport held an advantage at Valencia, it was only a small one. On day one of the test, the top 22 drivers were covered by just one second, and all 28 drivers were within 1.7s.
Next year is the third and final season with the current Dallara GP2 chassis and, if this test session is anything to go by, the teams have mostly mastered it. The racing, which will again be on Bridgestone's slick GP2 tyres, should be closer than ever.
