Japanese Grand Prix postponed19/04/2010

It was confirmed this morning that the Japanese Grand Prix at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit near Mito has been postponed because of disrupted air travel caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Finland.

Instead, Bridgestone's home grand prix has been rescheduled for 3 October, making it the first in a back-to-back trio of races in Japan, Malaysia and Australia. It will be an action-packed end to the season with four races being held in the month of October, and the final six rounds of the 18-event championship being held within a period of eight weeks.

Last year the weather also played havoc with the Japanese Grand Prix as the qualifying session was cancelled due to a torrential downpour. Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo took his first victory on Bridgestone tyres ahead of teammate Valentino Rossi and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.

The statement from Dorna and the FIM read as follows:

"The recent vulcano eruption in Iceland has resulted in an ash cloud cover infiltration. Air traffic space over Europe has stopped all international travel in and out of Europe.

"This case of ‘force majeure’ has obliged the Grand Prix Permanent Bureau composed of the FIM President Vito Ippolito and Dorna C.E.O. Carmelo Ezpeleta, with the agreement of the Grand Prix Promoter, Mobilityland Corporation, to postpone the Grand Prix of Japan planned on 25 April 2010.

"The Grand Prix Permanent Bureau proposed equally to the FIM to reschedule the Grand Prix of Japan on 3 October 2010."
