International Challenge of the Stars karting crown goes to Michael Schumacher
Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver and event organiser Felipe Massa was pipped to the annual International Challenge of the Stars karting crown by ex team-mate Michael Schumacher, after the German driver dominated Saturday’s running at the Florianopolis circuit and finished second on Sunday.
Schumacher dominates Saturday's running
Felipe Massa made his first competitive appearance since sustaining serious head injuries during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session. Starting from 11th on the grid, Massa battled his way towards the front of the field beating Renault test driver Lucas di Grassi to third place with a last lap pass. Michael Schumacher won Saturday’s race, closely followed in second by Vitantonio Liuzzi.
Massa clinches popular victory
The partially reversed grid left Schumacher and Massa further down the pack for the start of Sunday’s race. The ex team-mates fought through the field, with Massa eventually beating Schumacher to victory by 0.087 seconds. Third place went to IndyCar driver Vitor Meira, with Rubens Barrichello finishing fourth.
Schumacher claims the karting crown for the second time
After clinching the win in Saturday’s opening round and finishing runner-up to Massa on Sunday, Schumacher took the overall title with 42 points to the Brazilian’s 36. Vitor Meira finished third in the standings on 26 points.
Also competing in the event was past and present Formula 1 racers such as; Rubens Barrichello, Nelson Piquet, Enrique Bernoldi, Antonio Pizzonia, Christian Fittipaldi, Tarso Marques, Ricardo Zonta and Luciano Burti, plus IndyCar stars Tony Kanaan, Vitor Meira, Mario Moraes and Raphael Matos.
